Camera Shy? Here’s How To Get Started On Video Anyway!

real estate marketing tips

If you’ve ever opened Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok, watched other agents post videos, and thought “I could never do that…” you’re not alone.

A lot of strong, professional agents feel stuck with short-form video for one simple reason: they don’t feel confident on camera. And when you’re already juggling clients, deadlines, and showings, it’s easy to decide that videos for social are something you’ll just get to later.

But here’s the truth: you don’t have to be outgoing or perfectly polished to create short-form videos that work on social. You just need a realistic way to get started with it in a way that works for you!

So this guide is designed to help camera-shy agents ease into video with simple, low-pressure content ideas that build confidence over time.

Why Video Matters: Even If You’re Not Trying to “Go Viral”

Short-form video isn’t just a trend. It’s one of the fastest ways to build visibility and trust with people who don’t know you yet.

They help you:

  • stay top-of-mind with your sphere

  • attract future clients who are watching quietly

  • build credibility without constantly “selling”

  • show consistency and professionalism

  • create connection faster than static posts alone

And the best part?

Short-form video doesn’t have to be time-consuming, complicated, or uncomfortable.

Start with Reels That Don’t Require Talking or That You Don’t Have to Be In At All!

One of the easiest ways to begin posting Reels is to create content where you don’t speak on camera or aren’t even in the clips.

This is where two styles really shine, and anyone can start doing them right away:

✅ B-ROLL REELS

B-roll = short clips where no one is talking.

This can include you or it doesn’t have to. These are quick clips you can use to add text or sounds to get your message across without requiring you to be front and center.

Some easy b-roll video to start with might be:

  • you walking into a listing

  • setting out open house signs

  • typing at your laptop

  • footage of a home or neighborhood

Then, you can add text on the screen to share your message with

something like "Come with me for an inside look at this waterfront home for sale in INSERT AREA" or "What only locals know about INSERT COMMUNITY..."

We also have a complete B-Roll idea checklist of footage to build a simple but effective b-roll library so you can easily and quickly get started sharing video! Want a copy? Just let us know!

✅ POV REELS

POV stands for “point of view.” It’s filmed as if the viewer is with you, and it’s another simple way to start sharing reels without being on camera.

It can also be a helpful tool in letting followers get to know you and your brand.

Some POV ideas to start with:

  • You walking through your favorite neighborhood community

  • You having coffee in your favorite local shop

  • You preparing marketing materials and flipping through them

  • You walking into a new listing

POV content works extremely well because it feels real, modern, and relatable without putting pressure on you to perform. So try it out!

Helpful Tip if you Struggle with Being on Camera: Use Text on Screen First, then try using Your Voice

If talking on camera feels intimidating, you can start with on-screen text only while you build your confidence up.

Then, once you feel comfortable with B-roll and text, the next “easy upgrade” is adding a voiceover. Voiceovers are a great option because you can simply read off what you want to say and keep your face off camera while still adding a bit of you and your personality into the video.

Simply put your video together, then record a voiceover explaining your message or what the video is showing, and add the audio into your video. And the great thing is, adding text or voiceovers to your videos is something you can do in any simple video editor like CapCut, Canva, or right in the social platforms' editors!

THE CONFIDENCE PLAN: START SMALL AND BUILD UP

And if you really want to work your way up to being more confident to show up on camera, try this plan to get you more comfortable!

The biggest mistake camera-shy agents make is thinking they need confidence before they begin. But confidence is built through repetition, not perfection.

So here’s a simple progression to try:

1. Film Your B-roll and POV footage

No talking, just clips of what you’re up to this week.

2. Post a short-form video of B-roll with text overlay

Add text that shows what you’re doing or add some personality!

3: Add voiceover to ONE Reel

Just one! Keep it short and simple.

4: Try a 2–3 second video with you in it - optional to be talking!

Even something tiny counts, like “Check out my latest listing!”

You don’t even have to post it to your feed, you can share it to your social stories!

These are temporary and go away after 24 hours, so it's a great lower-pressure way to start getting more comfortable sharing videos of you.

Any small step forward is still forward, and the more you show up on video, the easier it will get. Keep this up, and in time, you’ll be sharing more videos with confidence and seeing more results from them.

ONE LAST TIP TO MAKE IT EASIER: DON’T START FROM SCRATCH

A lot of agents get stuck because creating a video feels so overwhelming. From having to think of the idea to filming the clips, editing it together, formatting it correctly, and getting it shared to all the platforms... it can feel like a lot.

That’s why we offer our agents different resources to make it all easier for them!

From video ideas to post templates they can easily drop their own footage into and share, we make it easy for them to create custom content and show up on social in a way that works.

The examples here show a sneak peek at what those look like, but if you want to see more, let us know!

And remember, your videos don’t need to be perfect.

Short-form video is one of the best ways get results on social, and the agents who win with it aren’t always the loudest. They’re simply the ones who were willing to start!
